World of Noise

lyrics

In Exeter I slipped my hand in the glove
Of the Fascist Groove Thang and the Action of Love
Banging on a chair with spoon and a knife
Spitting out five little rude years of life
I remember the day when my dad said ‘Son –
You should grow up to be a journalist like me and your mum’
But I was Adam Ant in my own mind
I said ‘perhaps I could be a journalist in my spare time’
Well, the ‘table went round and the radio screamed
And when the house fell down while the family dreamed
Words tumbled about like unruly boys
But they said nothing…
I just listened to the noise

My locks went up as Thatcher stepped down
And a man called Johnny and his words on the crown
made me write on walls and scream off my head
And eventually call myself things like Ed Zed
But then Ari and Viv came along and the words that they wrote
Lit a great fire inside this little scrote
Put the noise in my mind as well as my hand
I said 'Diddley Daddy, I understand'
Oh, some haphazard years have unfolded since
I filled them with Fuzzbox, Debussy and Prince
Now I purr from my rooftop in velveteen voice
‘I am a king…
…for I am a man of noise’

There are a great many things that I haven't done
Never been to Lyme Regis or fathered a son
I've been told on occasion that the noise is to blame
Though try as I might I cannot find the shame
And I never gave a fig about making money
Which is just as well really, as I’ve hardly any
The carousel spins and the city boys dance
But I just need the noise to gleefully prance
Around this heaving, breathing city
And without the noise where would I be?
In a dingy old boozer, drinking my life away
(Though I may be doing that a bit anyway)
In a world that's made a god out of choice
The best I ever made…
… was the world of noise

Let’s raise a glass, boys and girls…

To The Walking Abortions and Charlie May
To Mr. Wrongtom and Deemas J
Prince Far I, Pigbag and Delia D.
Extreme Noise Terror and the Fun Boy Three
To Micachu, Konk and Edgard Varese
Cravats, Delta 5 and Those Dancing Days
To Merrill Garbus, to Dennis Bovell
The Inconsolables and Dinosaur L
To the oropendula and the shiny cowbird
To the clang of machines and the spoken word
To the men, to the women, to the girls and the boys
Listen to the glorious rhythm of it all…
This is the world of noise.

Transatlantic couple Varrick and Ed Zed have been coaxing crooked pop songs out of disillusionment, animals and the glorious horrors of modern life since before Brexit. Drums, computers and household objects are their tools.
